9.3.06: DJ Monster
By Will Connor

Ka Lamakua: How long have you been a DJ?
Monster: Since birth.
KL: Where did you first spin?
MNSTR: (Here) at the station.
KL: Have you always played this genre of music as a DJ?
MNSTR: Yes, although I subbed a show recently and played classical music.
KL: Who are some of your favourite artists this year?
MNSTR: Slayer, one of my all-time fave bands has just released a new album,
"Christ Illusion." Others include Dragonforce, Strapping Young Ladd, SOG,
Wednesday 13.
KL: Who are some of your favourite artists of all times?
MNSTR: Slayer, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica (the Metallica of old,
their "Master of Puppets" is the pinnacle of grandeur, the classic among
classics, the standard toward which all other metal bands must strive.)
KL: Who are some of your favourite DJs?
MNSTR: Well...all KTUH DJs are my favourite--and I'm not just saying that
because I am their supervisor and need to be impartial.
KL: What have you got lined up for this semester or the distant future as a
DJ?
MNSTR: To shred or not to shred, tiz this the question? Nobler is the
distortion pedal than the tremolo bar. Shred, shred against the dying of
the light!
In other words, I plan Just to continue striding valiantly forward into the
tepid musical landscape and shredding like a samurai warrior.
KL: Can you give some advise to a DJ just starting out?
MNSTR: As with anything, interest is the most critical ingredient. From
there, it's just practice. Adopt an attitude of continuous, never-ending
improvement, and you will one day reach your goals.
An important aspect is conducting Interviews. As a metal DJ, I've had the
opportunity to interview numerous metal artists from around the world, some
of whom were those I grew up listening to: Vinney Paul from Pantera, David
Ellifson from Megadeth, Andreas Kisser from Sepultura. Since I am highly
interested in the process of creativity, I'll focus a significant portion of
my interviews on their evolution as a musician and how they construct their
music. My goal is to give my listeners, especially those just embarking on
a musical endeavour, an idea of what others had to go through to reach the
point of success. Additionally, I hope that by learning that each artist
has their own unique way of creating, listeners will be inspired to look for
and nurture their own creative voice.
