Ka Lamakua :: The Creative Element at UH Manoa

HELP WANTED ::(after)words

01.17.07:: CALL TO STUDENTS!

Last semester, two UH students began an after-school creative writing project at Castle High School.

This semester, we're looking to expand. In a big way.

Interested in teaching creative writing to high school students?

Would you like to support a creative writing program with other skills you may have?

Hawai‘i’s public high school students often lack opportunities to explore their creativity.

If this sounds like a problem you’d like to take action on, join us!, a small group of UH students enthusiastic about writing, in our pilot program, [after]words.

[after]words aims to bring UH students to high schools once a week to bring to life an after-school creative writing program for small groups of high school students. [after]words will provide these high school students with a supportive environment in which to learn about and enjoy the process and rewards of writing outside of class, of writing for themselves and for each other, for an audience beyond standardized test scorers.

Part of our mission is to increase high school students’ awareness of and engagement with Hawai‘i literatures and artists. But we’re open to other themes, too.

We’re looking for volunteers

People enthusiastic about empowering Hawai‘i high school students.

People willing to contribute passion and brains—and a little time or lots of time—to the project, whether in or out of the classroom.

We welcome people from all backgrounds; there are diverse ways to contribute to this project if you are not comfortable or interested in working with others on their writing.

Planning Meeting: Jan 26th @ Coffeeline (inside the Atherton YMCA grey building) 10:30 am
