LUNCH POEMS
KUYKENDALL (sustainability) COURTYARD
Tuesday, Feb. 27th
12:00-1:00
a monthly series dedicated to putting poetry in public places, promoting fresh student work, and cultivating a larger audience for word artists.
The Lineup...
Marika Stokset Staff is a graduate of UH Manoa with her bachelors in English. In 2006, she spent the majority of her free time writing and editing poems for her honors thesis project, "Only a Few Days Bloomed." Marika is honored to be reading at Lunch Poems, though excited and nervous, as it will be the first time she has publicly performed pieces from her thesis. Marika's other interests include cats and coffee.

I AM LIKE THE MOON BECAUSE I BROOD
YOUR COLLAPSE IS A GIANT, HARRIET
Darron E. Cambra birthed his first real poem in an attempt to escape the word count of daily writing assignment while at University High School. The early poetry bled of angst and predictable rhyme patters. Darron found his writer’s voice while getting his 6-year degree in creative writing and even more creative excuses at Western Washington University. He is currently studying for a post-bac in Education at UH Manoa. A large ego and the desire for attention drew Darron from the page to the stage, and after many failed attempts and embarrassing mistakes, Darron has become a noticeable figure in the Hawai’i Slam Community (because he is tall) and is a Mentor and Facilitator for Youth Speaks Hawai’i where he copies the talented teens’ poetry and passes it off as his own. His new book ‘True Confessions of a Compulsive Liar’ will also be available.

Stri Longanecker moved to Honolulu two and a half years ago to pursue a career in learning, writing, and teaching, and has fallen madly in love with Oahu. She hopes to continue her creative writing and academic career in the UH graduate department and is active in the Honolulu Arts community. She is honored to work with Youth Speaks Hawai'i, a non-profit organization that facilitates slam poetry writing and performance workshops for 13-19 year olds, as a mentor and administrator. Although she adores poetry, she refuses to limit herself regarding genre, and hopes to explore an endless variety of forms of expression.
and mandolin madness ...
Chris Cerna is currently pursuing a B.A. in music performance at UH Manoa. Though his first and primary instrument is the piano, he’s spent the last seven years playing the mandolin, forming the band Hightide Bluegrass Band -- purveyors of traditional bluegrass and driving three-part harmonies. Listen to his stuff at http://www.chriscerna.com and check him out every Saturday at Ala Moana Macy’s from 1-3.
